Securing and Preparing for Media Interviews

April 24, 2014

A big part of a public relations professional's job is to secure media interviews and then prepare your spokesperson for the interview.

First -- what are the best ways to secure the interview?  I know -- you heard tips last month from a media panel, but did you learn?  Are you still blasting out emails to every person on your list or are you being selective?  Are you following up with personal calls?  Are you taking time to get to know producers, editors, writers, etc., and what topics they care about?    Or are you just checking the box for your boss or the client so you can say you reached out to EVERYONE?

Second -- if you do secure the interview, how are you preparing the client, your boss, or the company spokesperson?  Have you done a run through in front of your Iphone to get them comfortable?  Did you go over what to wear?  What about talking points?  Have you ever had professional media trainers come in and teach your executives what to do...or sometimes more importantly....what not to do?

This month's luncheon will give you some tips on securing interviews and preparing for them. Our panelists will give you some good examples --- and also some trainwreck horror stories.  Here's hoping the horror stories they tell aren't ones that you were a part of....we'll ask them to not disclose the names to protect the not-so-innocent.

Panelists include:

  • Jon Ralston, Anchor, Ralston Reports, KSNV, Ch 3 Las Vegas
  • Dana Gentry, Executive Producer, Ralston Reports, KSNV, Ch 3 Las Vegas
  • Cynthia Newdel, owner, The Cynthia Daniel Company
  • Adam Burke, News Director, Nevada Public Radio
