President's Report
PRSA National's August Strategies & Tactics explores leadership through the theme, “Lead What's Next.” It got me thinking about a phrase we've heard across our profession for years: PR deserves a “seat at the table.”
Industry conversations continue to focus on whether communications belongs alongside executive leadership and how we earn that coveted seat. But earning the seat is only part of the equation. What do we do once we're there?
It's not enough to simply be invited into the room. We have to earn trust and continue demonstrating the value communications brings to decision-making. That means understanding the business and its stakeholders, recognizing implications others may not see, asking difficult questions and being willing to recommend a different path when necessary. It requires judgment.
I've been thinking about that same idea as our profession navigates AI. These tools can research, analyze, draft and synthesize information faster than ever. I believe that makes our judgment more valuable, not less. The differentiator is knowing what questions to ask, what to trust, what context may be missing and, ultimately, what to recommend. We heard this throughout our recent PRSA Las Vegas roundtable as practitioners discussed how they're applying tools to make better decisions and enable stronger outcomes.
That’s one of the reasons I find PRSA so worthwhile. Having a community where we can learn from and challenge one another as our profession evolves is really special, and from conversations I’ve had with many of you, I know I’m not alone in feeling that way. I’m incredibly proud of the community we’re continuing to build here in Las Vegas.
On Sept. 17, we'll explore real-world ethical gray areas at our annual Ethics Month program, followed in October by a celebration of 30 years of the Pinnacle Awards and outstanding work across our region.
So let's keep learning, stay curious and seek out perspectives different from our own. Whenever we sit at the table, with executives, clients or our own teams, let's continue showing the value communications brings to the conversation.
Cheers,
Courtney Fogle, APR
